About the Institute

Founded in the winter of 2026, the Wyoming Institute of Cowboy Existentialism (WICE) is a unique academic community dedicated to examining fundamental questions of human existence through the practical, grounded, and often solitary lens of cowboy culture and Western frontier life.

Core PrincipleWestern ExpressionExistential Concept
Radical ResponsibilityYou fix your own fence. We are condemned to be free (Sartre)
AuthenticityA man's word is his bond.Being-true-to-oneself (Heidegger)
Embodied BeingLife in the saddle, hands in the dirt.Being-in-the-world (Merleau-Ponty)
Confronting the AbsurdStaring down a blizzard or a empty horizon. The struggle for meaning in a silent universe (Camus)
ResolutenessSeeing the drive through, no matter what.Choosing one's project with commitment (Kierkegaard)
"The cowboy, alone on the range with only the horizon as witness, encounters the raw fact of his own existence in a way the city dweller, buffered by noise and crowd, never can."

Our campus is not just a collection of buildings, but a network of ranchlands, mountain trails, and open spaces where theory is tested against the unyielding reality of weather, livestock, and landscape. We believe philosophy isn't just read—it's lived, saddled, and ridden.
